Wheel strategy tax in Australia: records to keep

The wheel strings together sold puts, assigned shares and sold covered calls. Over a year that is dozens of linked lines, and the tax year boundary often cuts through a cycle. A clean ledger by date makes that visible.
What you need from your records
- Date and premium of every option you sold or bought
- How each position ended: bought back, expired, assigned or exercised
- The tax year (1 July to 30 June) each event falls in
- The currency and the exchange rate you use for conversion
What the tax treatment is
Official ATO pages could not be opened when this page was built (they returned an access error), so this tool deliberately states no tax treatment. For how options are taxed, start at ato.gov.au capital gains tax and ask a registered tax agent.
