Options tax in Australia: organise your IBKR statement
General information only. This is a record-keeping tool that adds up the premiums and closes in your own broker statement. It is not tax advice and not a tax agent service, and it is not affiliated with the ATO or any broker. It applies no tax treatment. Check your return with a registered tax agent.
Australian residents trading options through Interactive Brokers get a statement in US dollars with each trade, expiry and assignment on its own line. Before a tax agent can work on it, it helps to have the premiums and closes grouped by Australian tax year.
What you need from your records
- Date and premium of every option you sold or bought
- How each position ended: bought back, expired, assigned or exercised
- The tax year (1 July to 30 June) each event falls in
- The currency and the exchange rate you use for conversion
What the tax treatment is
Official ATO pages could not be opened when this page was built (they returned an access error), so this tool deliberately states no tax treatment. For how options are taxed, start at ato.gov.au capital gains tax and ask a registered tax agent.
This site does not interpret the rules for you. It does the bookkeeping part: sorting your statement by tax year and event so you or your tax agent can apply the rules.
